Press Release 3/2017

More than 1.800 runners took part in the IWB Basel Marathon this weekend as the popular event returned for its eighth edition. The stunning new course and improved event village at the Marktplatz, along with other technical improvements impressed participants and attracted more spectators than ever. Around 4.500 spectators cheered along the course.

For the 2017 IWB Basel Marathon, the organizers, IMG and LSVB, had decided to focus more on the  team categories  due to the increasing demand of participants wanting to take part. Teams of six runners were invited to take on either the half marathon (21km) or the full marathon distance (42km), while the individual runners could complete either the half marathon or 10km distance.

With perfect running conditions for the event, the athletes were cheered-on the entire length of the new course, through the Old Town and along the Rhine by huge numbers of spectators. The transition zone, with its new position on the market square, encapsulated a stadium-like atmosphere with many enthusiastic spectators and fans supporting the athletes throughout the day.

As well as an electric atmosphere and a great sense of the teams’ shared experience at the IWB Basel Marathon this year, there were also winners. In the King’s discipline, the team marathon (Ekiden), team Basel Running Club BRC (men), LSVB Frauenmannschaft 1 (women) and the Basel Running Club BRC (mixed) took first places. Alicia Moser and Neil Burton won the Half-Marathon, while Melanie Mauerer and Kai Zähringer took the win in the 10k run.

The IWB Basel Marathon is organized by the local running club, LSVB, in cooperation with event organizer IMG. The Basler energy supply company IWB is the title sponsor of the event. The next edition of the event will take place in September 2018.
