You want to participate in the IWB basel Marathon, but do not know which is the right category for you? We explain to you our 4 categories in detail, because the IWB Basel Marathon 2017 has something to offer for everyone.
10 kilometers single
The 10 km run is the ideal opportunity for amateurs and hobby athletes to participate in such a course. In this category the participant completes the 2.5 km course four times.
Half marathon single
During the half marathon, 21 km are completed. The first round will be completed on a 1.1 km course, followed by 8 laps on the 2.5 km course.
EKIDEN Team Marathon
In the EKIDEN Team Marathon, 6 runners share the marathons distance of 42 km. The name EKIDEN stands for long-distance relay runs and was developed in Japan in the 17th century. In order to transport news from Tokyo to Kyoto, the route was then divided among several runners and passed the news from runner to runner.
At the IWB Basel Marathon the message is replaced by a Velcro with integrated chip. However, the system remains the same. Each runner will complete a section of 2 – 4 laps on a circuit of about 2.5 km. A total of 17 laps will be completed. A team consists of 6 runners. Each team member may only run one section. The runners of the individual sections are determined at the time of registration. The breakdown is as follows:
Runner A – 4 laps (10 km) | Runner B – 2 laps (5 km) | Runner C – 4 laps (10 km)
Runner D – 2 laps (5 km) | Runner E – 2 laps (5 km) | Runner F – 3 rounds (7,2 km)
EKIDEN Team half marathon
The system and rules are the same as for the EKIDEN Team Marathon. However, instead of the 42 km only 21 km are completed. The breakdown is as follows:
Runner A – 2 laps (3,6 km) | Runner B – 1 round (2,5 km) | Runner C – 2 laps (5 km)
Runner D – 1 laps (2,5 km) | Runner E – 1 round (2,5 km) | Runner F – 2 laps (5 km)
Start and finish of all runs are located directly on the market square in the center of Basel.
We wish you lots of fun and success at the IWB Basel Marathon

Do you sometimes count your steps while walking?
Sure, because standstill means a step backwards. And: the best ever barefoot, then the shoe of life does not press you…
If you could wish for it: Sixpack or well-shaped muscular legs?
Muscular legs; Good for soil adhesion and stability.
Which sport do you prefer? And which one are you best in?
On today’s favorite no one at all. But for health’s sake: daily hometraining.
Your personal greatest sporting success?
It’s long ago. Countless regional junior titles in athletics and various national games with the Swiss handball national team.
Your personal idol in sports?
Phil Taylor. Thanks to him Darts developed into an exciting spectator and TV sport.
What cannot be missing in your refrigerator, before and after the sport?
Wild berries.
Your favourite sport as a spectator?
Tennis is logical, but also sports in its diversity. Definitely no pseudo-events and also not those, which follow a volatile trend or only the commercial lane.
What talent that you don’t have, would you like to own?
Drawing or piano playing, most preferably both.
What would you like as president of Swiss Indoors Basel to give the participants of the IWB Basel Marathon on the route?
It is not about being the best, but about surpassing oneself.
Do you participate in the IWB Basel Marathon?
Better not, but thank you for the invitation!
Thank you, dear Roger Brennwald, for your stimulating answers!
]]> Do you sometimes count your steps while walking?
No, but the kilometers when running! But I ran once with a metronome, so I could see how high my step rate is – so I could just calculate my step number after every training.
If you could wish for it: Sixpack or well-shaped muscular legs?
Most preferably both – the legs should be rather strong than big muscle-packed.
Which sport do you prefer? And which one are you best in?
In a quizshow that would really not have many points: 2x running!
Your personal greatest sporting success?
Victory at the Vienna Marathon and the surpass of the Marathon Swiss Record.
Your personal idol in sports?
Kathrine Switzer, because she showed everyone that even women can run marathons and Paula Radcliffe, because she has shown to all ‘white women’ that they can win marathons, too.
What cannot be missing in your refrigerator, before and after the sport?
Before and after the sport I eat less from the fridge, rather from the ‘pan’, cold food tolerates my body after sports stress rather bad …
Your favourite sport as a spectator?
I am very athletic ‘broad’ interested, depending on the season ski race, football games etc.
What talent that you don’t have, would you like to own?
To be more patient, so I do not always begin to “scratch” my legs, if I have planned to walk, but for some reason it is not (yet) possible.
What would you like as an Olympian to give the participants of the IWB Basel Marathon on the route?
I would like to give the participants not only tips for the competition – a marathon starts much earlier! Absolutely early – so now (!) begin with the training, so that the course can be completed at the end of September. With a few running training in the legs and with the anticipation of the event, running is even more fun – the tournament will be a success, I am convinced.
Do you participate in the IWB Basel Marathon?
Unfortunately not, I hope to be on the starting line for the Berlin Marathon on September 24th.
We would like to thank Maja for the interview.
]]> Do you sometimes count your steps while walking?
That is nowadays done unasked by a smartphone. Sometimes I am amazed when looking atthe display. Yesterday I apparently made over ten thousand steps and that, although I spent half the day in meetings. Possibly, the mental steps are counted.
If you could wish for it: Sixpack or well-shaped muscular legs?
Sixpack! There is nothing better in the summer than to cool off with a cool beer.
Which sport do you prefer? And which one are you best in?
This is not the same question! So I like to be outdoors in nature. For example, when cycling. My biggest successes, however, I celebrate in the discipline “Looking-for-excuses–so-I-don’t-need-to-go-to-the-gym”.
Your personal greatest sporting success?
1m95 at high-jump.
Your personal idol in sports?
For me as far as positive thinking is concerned, the former tennis protagonist Vitas Gerulaitis is the measure of all things. Sixteen times, Jimmy Connors lost him, beating him in the seventeenth game, and stunned the world of sports with the phrase “Do you remember that nobody is beating Vitas Gerulaitis seventeen times in a row!”
What cannot be missing in your refrigerator, before and after the sport?
Before sports: enough water and a banana. After the sport: see sixpack.
Your favourite sport as a spectator?
I have the great privilege of being able to witness countless sports as a spectator as Basel sports Minister of Sports. So I do not want to commit myself, there are simply too many great things.
What talent that you don’t have, would you like to own?
Soccer talent – and then, after a perfect cross from Delgado, shooting the ball in the opposing goal…
What would you like as a government council and Basel Minister of Sports to give the participants of the IWB Basel Marathon on the route?
The old sportsman’s wisdom: Give it your all, just don’t quit! And if it does not work so well, always remember: sweat is crying fat!
Do you participate in the IWB Basel Marathon?
No, I give a great experience to all runners and therefore I do not want anyone to be disturbed by a governing body that only takes away space on the finish line.
We would like to thank Mr. Cramer for the interview.
]]>For the first time, runners can take on the half marathon as a team as well as the full marathon, while individual runners can still choose to test themselves with the 10km option or the half marathon. This year’s event will be the most attractive race to date for both spectators and runners alike. The course will have the most stunning of backdrops with a route concentrated on Basel’s historic inner city; Central, compact, clear and sporty. The start, transition zones and finish area for all categories will be moved to the Marktplatz – one of the city’s most beautiful and prominent locations
Be there and sign up for your run!
